What natural language search features are available in library databases, and how do I use them?
Last Updated: May 13, 2026

Several library databases now support natural language search, meaning you can enter conversational phrases and questions to explore topics and find relevant sources more efficiently.

Enhanced search capabilities are currently available through the platforms listed below.

Ebook Central:

Natural language search enables users to locate relevant titles and chapters by entering descriptive queries, rather than relying on precise keyword strings.

EBSCOhost:

With the "Natural Language Search" feature enabled, users can enhance search capabilities using everyday language.

This feature also prompts related questions to further refine a topic and includes a "Show Refined Query" option, which displays the Boolean operators used to generate results.

JSTOR:

JSTOR’s research tool will appear on the item page for journal articles, book chapters, and research reports, and as a search option in addition to their "Semantic Search" results based on natural language capabilities.

Once an eligible text is selected, the research tool will start the conversation of how your search query relates to the content by asking: “How is [your search query] related to this text?”, allowing users to continue evaluating the material in conversation with the tool. Users must have their own JSTOR account for this feature to be enabled.
